One of the most peaceful elements that you can add to a garden is a water feature. The sound of flowing water is calming and acts as white noise to drown out the other sounds around your property. Flowing water also adds ions to the air that can actually help to improve your mood. If you want to add a water feature to your yard, it doesn’t have to be extravagant. In fact there are some beautiful water features that you could even DIY from up-cycled materials. Here are five to consider.
Bamboo Deer Scare
A common sight in traditional Japanese gardens, the bamboo deer scare is a water feature that does double duty. The pump for this water feature pushes the water up to a spout that fills a length of bamboo below it. When the bamboo is full enough, the weight of the water causes it to pivot downwards and hit the rocks below, dumping the water back into the pond. The sound scares away deer that might try to eat your garden, but it is also a soothing, rhythmic sound that many people like.
Pool-Less Fountain
If you have children or small pets in your family, you may be avoiding water features because you worry about them falling into the standing water. A pool-less fountain erases that worry. For this water feature, the tub or tank is hidden, buried and covered with screen and rocks. The pump shoots water up and it falls down and appears to disappear into the rocks.
Bird Bath
Water features in gardens aren’t limited to large ponds or fountains. Don’t forget the feathered visitors to your yard. Upgrade a simple bird bath by adding a very gentle fountain to it. This will keep the water moving and deter mosquitoes. You could also consider elevating it in an interesting way, such as on top of rocks.
Repurposed Containers
You can repurpose almost any container into a fountain if it will hold water. From planters of various sizes to old wash pails, whiskey barrels, and wine casks, you can use them and an inexpensive pump to create a stunning fountain for gardens of any size.
Pipe Water Curtains
A length of pipe can make a truly stunning fountain, especially when it is installed on a wall that allows you to hide the tubing from the pump. Put a series of holes along one side of the pipe so that the water falls in a curtain into a tub below.
