The Posts are Rotten
One of the most obvious ways to tell you need a new deck is to look at the posts supporting it. A brand new deck will have a concrete base that will hold it steady. However, many old decks won’t have this base. Instead, they’ll probably have a wooden base that can rot after too many seasons of wind, rain, and water damage. Replacing your posts can extend the life of your deck.
The Railings are Loose
You should also make sure that the deck railings are in good condition. Someone could get hurt if they’re too loose. Nails might hold the railings in place for the time being, but you’ll need a more permanent solution. That solution: bolts, washers, and nuts that secure the railings without scratching the beautiful wood used to build your deck.
Too Much Structural Damage
Decks can last for decades, but eventually, they’ll reach the end of their lifespan. Rotting contributes to the structural damage that can ruin a deck. Insects like termites and ants moving in can also make this damage worse. Rot damage also causes the support screws to come loose which weakens the deck even more.
