What Material is It Made Of?
The material your deck is made of plays a large role in determining if/when it will need to be replaced. Different materials will age differently. A composite deck will last for much longer than one that is made of wood. If you have a wood deck, make sure there are no signs of warping or insect damage. With a composite deck, you may notice some fading when the material is beginning to approach the end of its life.
Inspect the Posts
The first place you should check for damage is around the posts that hold up the deck. Water can gather at the bases of the posts, causing softening of the ground and water damage. If you notice that the posts are damaged but the rest of the deck is alright, it is possible for us to just replace the damaged posts. Is the Railing Loose?
People tend to gather around the railings of the deck and lean on them, so they’re usually the first part that loosens. Give your railing a wiggle. If it doesn’t move then it’s just fine. If it does move, then it may need to be tightened or replaced. If your deck railings are made of wood, you should consider replacing them with a composite material so they will be more sturdy and last longer.
