S’mores
For many of us, the first thing we think of when we think about an open fire is roasting marshmallows and making s’mores. It’s a lot of fun to just hang your marshmallow over the fire while you chat with friends and family, realize you burned it, and figure out who likes the burned ones to see if they’ll trade you for a golden-brown one.
Kebabs
For something a bit different, you can try a kebab party. It requires a little more setup because the food needs to be prepared ahead of time. Marinate any meats, and cut both meats and vegetables into small pieces that are suited for kebabs. Set up an ingredient bar near the fire pit so everyone can assemble their own kebabs and roast them over the fire.
Ghost Stories
If you’re feeling spooky, grab a flashlight and let everyone around the fire tell their favorite ghost story. This is a great activity for both adults and children, and it gives everyone a chance to be creative or tell an old tale from their childhood.
Life Stories
If scary stories aren’t your thing, it’s always fun to gather around a fire and tell life stories. You might be surprised by some of the crazy adventures your parents and grandparents, or even your friends, have had over the years. It’s fun for the storyteller to re-live fun memories, and it’s fun for the listeners to imagine it. This kind of activity can also deepen bonds between friends and family.
Art
A fire pit can be a refreshing space to create art or keep a journal. You can go out at different times of the day and night to enjoy the warmth of the fire pit and paint or draw landscapes, sunrises, sunsets, stars, and the fire, or the people around it. You can also take photos or journal about what you’re seeing and experiencing as you sit there.
Backyard Camping
A fire pit makes for a great excuse to enjoy a weekend of backyard camping. Make it a challenge and try to prepare yourselves to stay outside as much as possible. Pack coolers full of food and drinks, bring a change of clothes and have some backyard entertainment ready such as games or a bluetooth speaker to play music.
