Hands Off the Grass
While your lawn is wet and flooded, avoid it. Mowing wet grass can cause compaction and possibly create ruts in the soft ground. Once it dries out, mow with the highest blade setting, so you are mowing the top of the grass. Walking on wet grass can damage the grass blades. When you no longer leave a wet footprint in the grass, it is safe to walk on.
Some Things You Can Do
Firstly, if there is flooding or standing water on your lawn, wear gloves and protective gear before touching it. Floodwater can be contaminated, and it is best to avoid it. Consider aerating them with a pitchfork or power aerator if your lawn has formed little mounds under the grass. Aerating your lawn can be a delicate process, so only attempt if you are confident. These organisms love the wet ground and will flourish in a flooded lawn. Mushrooms that grow on a lawn after a flood are called “fairy rings.” It is important to remove the moss, mushrooms, and algae that can grow, so your grass is able to get the sunlight it needs to dry out completely.
