If you’ve got an area where high foot traffic is a feature that can’t be avoided, landscaping around that area isn’t always easy. Large amounts of foot traffic can prevent plants from growing and thriving, but you still want those areas to look rich and full of life. Commercial areas are particularly known for struggling with high foot traffic areas and landscaping efforts. When Honeysuckle Nursery & Design works alongside you to create the landscape of your dreams, you’ll be certain that even high traffic areas will receive the best treatment possible.
Direct Traffic With Your Landscape
One design principle to think about is how your landscaping efforts can actually be used to direct pedestrian traffic. For example, thorny plants are capable of protecting your more delicate beds of flowers and will draw up harder boundaries than would otherwise exist. Using hedges and bushes can help define those boundaries too and keep people away from certain areas without the need of installing something like a fence. The right kind of flowers can be incredibly useful in designing a landscape around high traffic areas, too.
Ice Plants
It may not sound like a bundle of joy, but ice plants (or delosperma) actually love full-on sunlight. Their foliage is similar to succulent plants, which are all the rage, and it’s also very easy to grow and make sure it thrives. They typically bloom from June to September and can withstand foot traffic pretty well.
Ajura Reptans
Also known as burgundy glow or even “bugle weed,” this plant is going to spread throughout your landscape quickly but is big on color and impact. You’ll notice it because of its purple blooms, as well as green and white variegated leaves that can add some depth to your landscape. This plant does prefer shade, so it can be a good choice for pathways closer to your home.
Creeping Blue Mazus
Creeping blue mazus, or mazus reptans, spreads quickly and is sometimes even used as a substitute for grass. Unlike grass though, it blooms during May and June with pale purple flowers that will light up your yard with beauty. Creeping blue mazus are often effectively used in-between stepping stones to add some texture that can still stand up to high foot traffic.
Moss Pinks
Phlox subulata offer beautiful evergreen foliage year-round, though in the mid-to-late spring, it also has pink blooms that can add an entire carpet of beautiful pink to your landscape.
