Memorial Day weekend marked the unofficial start of summer for millions of Americans. Homeowners with pools tend to open their pools up for the season during this time of the year. While a pool can be a source of rest, relaxation, and refreshment during the summer, if you have children it can also become a source of worry. A swimming pool can be dangerous to your family if you’re not practicing good pool safety techniques. Here are some pool safety tips you should follow all year long, if you aren’t already.
Physical Security
Barriers such as fencing are essential for great pool safety. Check with your local municipal code and homeowners association guidelines to make sure your fence complies, but experts recommend at least a four-foot high fence or barrier with a self-closing, self-latching gate at a minimum to ensure adequate protection. When you aren’t using your pool, install a safety cover and remove any stairs or ladders. You can also consider installing a pool alarm specially designed to go off if someone breaches the pool area.
Complete Supervision
When your children are using your pool, make sure they are always under active supervision, either by yourself or by someone you trust. Never allow anyone to swim in the pool alone. And consider having younger or inexperienced swimmers wear a life jacket approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Keep the Pool Clean
A clean pool minimizes the risk of earaches, rashes, and other serious problems. This is a component most people don’t think about when they consider pool safety, but it is as essential as any other technique.
Establish Pool Safety Habits
Safe practices, such as not running around the pool or not diving, are habits that ought to be instilled in swimmers from a young age. One of the best things you can do for a young swimmer is enroll them in swimming courses – this will teach them how to swim while also drilling home these essential pool safety habits. And consider enrolling yourself in an aquatics emergency course to learn how to respond in the event of an emergency.
