Generally, the heat of the sun, even in the dead of winter, can warm up some areas of water and allow the frozen flood to drain. If you decide to use rock salt, avoid placing it directly on your lawn. Keep it to the center of your walkways and if need be, sweep it from your lawn to avoid it poisoning the dirt.

While your lawn is wet and flooded, avoid it. Mowing wet grass can cause compaction and possibly create ruts in the soft ground. Once it dries out, mow with the highest blade setting, so you are mowing the top of the grass. Walking on wet grass can damage the grass blades. It is safe to walk on when you no longer leave a wet footprint in the grass. During the winter, the standing water may freeze.
