Room to Run
All dogs have an instinct to establish a perimeter around what they see as their territory. Your dog will want to “patrol” your yard. You can easily do this by creating a path for them to run on. You can use poured concrete, gravel, pavers, or any other material that will be comfortable for them to run on. If you create a concrete path right up against the fence, you may even be able to deter some digging as well!
Nature’s Call
Perhaps most importantly, your dog will need a place to relieve themselves. This does not have to be in your beautifully landscaped flower bed or lawn. Set up an area on your property that can be their designated spot to go and train them to go there and nowhere else. If you have an older dog that’s already set in its ways, this may be a bit more difficult. If your dog is male, you should make sure the relief area has something that sticks up that he can “mark”.
Choose Plants Wisely
Everyone wants that large, lush garden. When choosing plants for your landscape, make sure you reach for plants that are safe for your dog. Avoid anything with spines or thorns. Also, make sure what you’re planting isn’t poisonous to your pooch either. If it is, place it in an area that the dog can’t get to!
