Winter hazel (Corylopsis) has translucent yellow petals on small blooms that show up in late winter, providing a nice little reminder that the weather will soon warm up. The blossoms are bell-shaped and hang downward, producing a sweet aroma.
Winter Sweet
Winter sweet (Chimonanthus praecox) tends to bloom in late winter for zone 7 but will bloom earlier in more temperate regions. Like winter hazel, the winter sweet has bell-shaped, pendulous blossoms with yellow petals—however, its petals are opaque.
Winter Heath
Winter heath (Erica carnea), also called December Red, blooms in early winter. It produces narrow, heavily-grouped blossoms that start pink and deepen to a light purple during the several weeks that it blooms. Its vibrancy is especially appreciated during the height of winter when the pink and purple hues provide a stark contrast to the beautiful white snow.
Witch Hazel
Witch hazel (Hamamelis) blooms anytime between late fall and early spring. The blossoms have long, thin petals that look more like little yellow sea urchins than flowers, making them an incredibly unique option for those looking for something more exotic. The blossoms produce a spicy aroma.
