Most people think that the arrival of fall heralds the end of outdoor living for another year, but that isn’t necessarily true. While there certainly is more to do outdoors during the summer, fall is also a great season to spend time outside, enjoying the sights, sounds, and beauty of nature (and honestly, it is much more comfortable than the summer heat in most cases). The biggest hiccup to fall outdoor living is that the sun sets earlier and earlier as we go through the season. This is easily overcome with appropriate lighting, however. Let’s review some of the more common outdoor lights and where you should think about having them installed
Path Lights
Lights that line a path are intended to help people see where they are walking and do so safely. They are often short, bollard-style lights, and they could be wired in or solar. They are very valuable in any yard to prevent accidental injury.
Step Lights
Similar to path lights, step lights help to prevent injury by highlighting the steps and showing people where to walk. They are usually only bright enough to illuminate the rise of each step so that people don’t trip. Make sure that you use them wherever the surface level changes, such as on doorways, stairs, and even the edge of your floating deck.
String Lights
String lights are the end-all-be-all of ambiance. These beauties add charm and personality to the space. They come in a variety of styles, from old-fashioned looking to twinkly Christmas-light styles.
Spotlights
Spotlights are designed to highlight and illuminate one particular thing. In many yards, this type of landscape lighting is installed to show off water features, art, or prized plants. They only point in a single direction, so install them where they will directly illuminate the element you want to show off.
Flood Lights
Finally, flood lights are usually mounted high on the side of the home, and they are very bright to “flood” an area with lots of light. While these are not great for creating ambiance, they are invaluable in an emergency, and even if you don’t plan to have them on very often, you should still have them installed.
